Preview: Bear Creek Music Festival in Live Oak, FL Nov. 10-13

After attending Bear Creek for the first time last year, we’ve decided this is our absolute favorite festival. It’s held within a beautiful venue and seems to have been built on a foundation of love! Utilizing a more grassroots style of organization, there is a strong sense of family among the coordinators, artists, and fans…having picked up on that vibe, we’re really looking forward to getting back to The Spirit of the Suwannee Music Park in Live Oak, FL for Bear Creek this year, November 10th-13th!

We know how important festival season is to many people (including us!), so how about extending the season into November?! Let’s take a look at the facts of the festival here. There are over 70 bands, with 20 of them playing 2 sets, 15 artists at large, and 6 stages! And if that’s not enough, there will also be live art to live music,a fully staffed area for children, and other various activities throughout the weekend.

…Not to mention it’s held at one of the best venues for a festival ever! Picture it: bath houses, disc golf, hiking trails, a country store (last year I forgot my glad there was a store!), golf-cart rentals, modern cabins, mini golf, sports lounge, swimming pool, fishing lake, bat houses, and canoe trips. We couldn’t think of anything else we might need at a festival!

New this year: Bear Creek and Suwannee Music Park are working together to make this festival as Green as possible! The park will now be recycling glass, plastic, aluminum and cardboard. In the past, only aluminum recycling was possible. Also, all of the food vendors will be using compostable materials to serve food. We definitely support this!

The Line-Up

While there are quite a few different genres and styles displayed at Bear Creek, there is a vibe that all the artist’s music has in common. The music we have experienced through Bear Creek is very authentic, organic,  passionate, and Funky! That’s truly the vibe that is created for this festival, and a huge part of what makes Bear Creek such a great experience, and so special to so many of the artists and fans.

We’re quite impressed that the coordinators of this festival can fit 2 sets of 20 different bands throughout the weekend. Among those groups are Zach Deputy, Dr. Lonnie Smith, Giant Panda Guerilla Dub Squad, Dumpstaphunk, Karl Denson’s Tiny Universe, Lettuce, Pimps of Joytime, The Coup ft. Boots Riley, The London Souls, and The New Mastersounds.

Groups we’re really looking forward to checking out: Chali 2na Band, Earphunk (Here’s a review we did of their new CD “Comin’ Up), Galactic, Garage A Trois, Orgone, Pimps of Joytime, The Funky Meters, Rubblebucket, Snarky Puppy, The Coup ft. Boots Riley, and so much more!

Also playing at Bear Creek will be Beats Antique, Soulive, Trey Anastasio Band, Marco Benevento, Big Gigantic, Medeski Scofield Martin and Wood, Dopapod, George Porter Jr. & The Runnin’ Pardners, and so many more! Check out the Full line up!

There will also be 15 ‘Artists at Large’ (a very exciting aspect specific to Bear Creek!) A few of the artists at large will be Freekbass, The Shady Horns (Ryan Zoidis and Sam Kininger of Lettuce!), Skerik, Billy Iuso, Johnny Vidacovich, Nikki Glaspie, Pee Wee Ellis, Robert Walter, and Roosevelt Collier. The fact that these artists could be jumping up on stage to jam at various points throughout the weekend adds that extra element of surprise to each show!

The full schedule won’t be out until later this fall, but to help you make plans for the festival ahead of time, here are the bands that will be playing on Thursday (4 stages open, 16 bands): Karl Denson’s Tiny Universe, Beats Antique, George Porter’s Runnin Pardners, The Coup, Dr. Lonnie Smith, Pimps of Joytime, London Souls, Papadosio, Juno What?!, Turkuaz, Zongo Juntion, Underground System, Sister Sparrow and the Dirty Birds, Giant Panda Guerilla Dub Squad, Shane Pruitt Band, and Strange Arrangement.
Update! Here’s the Daily Artists Schedule. Hourly schedule will be released later in the fall.
